IMDA2021Best IMD - Consumers Good / Durable

The awarded IMD product is a control panel for front load washers and dryers sold by GE Appliances. It was highly evaluated that we responded to customer needs by realizing multiple decorative and functional elements contained within one molded part, and supported our customer product commercially successful.

IMD (In-mold Decoration) is decoration process which transfers decorations and functions printed on the film to the surface of the resin when it is molded. The decorative film was produced by Nitec Industries, Inc. in Japan. Molding was performed by Eimo Technologies, Inc. in US and Nissha (Kunshan) Precision IMD Mold Co., Ltd. in China in order to meet the customer's supply chain. (All three companies belongs to Nissha Group.)

Assessment by the IMDA*:
This entry impressed the competition judges with the number of decorative and functional elements contained within one part. The customer required a premium look for the product, which required incorporating all of the cosmetic needs (chrome, high gloss, hard coat and hidden-until-lit LED areas) in a single IMD film. Without IMD, those individual operations would have had too high of a cost to satisfy the program budget. The high-gloss look with UV hard coat and custom-designed artwork make this a commercially successful product. With this part’s geometry, early supplier involvement was required to ensure no sink marks and knit lines.

*IMDA: A trade association representing molders, label printers, material suppliers, equipment suppliers and others committed to the development and growth of in-mold labeling and decorating products, technologies, and markets.
