NHK Historical Drama “Segodon” Special Exhibition Overview
NHK Historical Drama celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration with a yearlong series dedicated to Saigo Takamori.
Saigo worked his way up from a low-ranking samurai of the Satsuma (Kagoshima) domain to a leader of the Meiji Restoration. Not a single photograph remains of this singular hero, however, and much of his life is veiled in mystery. Organized in a tie-up with the television program, the exhibition presents artifacts and artworks, and explores the character and turbulent times of the icon affectionately known as “Segodon.”
Exhibits include the portrait of Saigo believed to depict his features most faithfully; Saigo’s motto “Keiten Aijin” (Respect the Divine, Love the People) written in calligraphy; the lavish furnishings of Atsuhime, whose wedding Saigo made efforts to arrange, including many items displayed for the first time; “Tobaku no micchoku,” the secret Imperial order given to the Satsuma–Choshu alliance to overthrow the shogunate; and newly discovered photographs detailing the making of Saigo’s famous bronze statue in Ueno, all of which showcase the fascinating life of Saigo Takamori.
