Commencement of proof of concept testing aimed at market creation of dye-sensitized solar cells

September 12, 2012

Nissha Printing Co.,Ltd.

For the three years from fiscal year 2013 to 2015, Nissha Printing Co., Ltd. will be using a grant from NEDO to perform proof of concept testing for high value added products such as advertising media and off-grid lighting using EneLEAF (dye-sensitized solar cells developed jointly with the Shimane Institute for Industrial Technology), which has an excellent, colorful and transparent design. With technical cooperation from the Shimane Institute for Industrial Technology, in the proof of concept testing we will work with both Ohsho Food Service Corporation and Kyoto City with the aim of creating markets for dye-sensitized solar cells.
*EneLEAF is a registered trademark or a trademark of Nissha Printing Co., Ltd.

Outline of the proof of concept testing

1. Measures with Ohsho Food Service Corporation

At the Ohsho Shijo-Omiya Branch, we will install wall mounted generating panels which make use of the characteristic of dye-sensitized solar cells that electricity is generated even when the incident light is at an angle. This will verify their practical use in positions where conventional silicon based solar cells cannot be installed.

2. Measures with Kyoto City
In the Okazaki area of Kyoto City, where many tourist and cultural resources are concentrated, the use of renewable energy and reduced energy consumption are being promoted in the "Okazaki Area Revitalization Vision" formulated by Kyoto City. With consideration of the visual appearance of the Okazaki area and the aim of redesigning the town using renewable energy sources, we will introduce off-grid lighting using dye-sensitized solar cells. New materials and design technologies such as the coloring agents will be included as part of these measures and verifications will be performed of the increased design and multicolored properties of the solar cells or of improvements to their durability.
We will also verify the effectiveness in cooperation with the "Okazaki Lighting and Art Promenade 2012" planned from October 26 - 28, 2012.

3. Measures with the Shimane Institute for Industrial Technology
In addition to technical support, for example, for data analysis for the proof of concept testing overall, we will also verify an increased number of colors in the coloring agents used in the dye-sensitive solar cells, and also the method for using the solar cells indoors, for example, in ordinary housing.
